February 18, 2009, Tokyo - CIVICUS's Deputy Director General Katsuji Imata spoke today at the World Bank Public Information Center (PIC Tokyo) evening seminar and coffee hour. Mr. Imata introduced CIVICUS and its objectives to offer a platform for civil society networks internationally. He discussed CIVICUS's Civil Society Index, which is used to measure the current status of civil society in across various countries.

February 17, 2009, Tokyo - 4 students from Sugao Junior High School in Kawasaki visited the World Bank Public Information Center (PIC Tokyo) today, to share findings from their research on the global environment, which focused on deforestation and climate change. They made a short presentation to the PIC Tokyo staff. Koichi Omori, Tokyo Office Communications Associate, then spoke more on issues of global development. The students plan to make another presentation to share their findings with friends and teachers, back at school.

Hearing-impaired leaders in Mongolia and Japan engage by videoconference[]
February 9, 2009, Tokyo - Hearing-impaired communities in Japan and Mongolia shared their experiences about the deaf movements in both countries, via videoconference hosted by the World Bank's Global Development Learning Network (GDLN). American Sign Language (ASL) was used as the common language, while Japanese Sign Lanuage and Mongolia Sign Language were used locally at each site.
Croatia World Heritage Exhibition Opening Reception[]
February 5, 2009, Tokyo - Mr. Sadakazu Tanigaki, former Japanese Minister of Finance, gave a few words at an opening reception today for a photo exhibition of Croatia World Heritage sites, held at the World Bank Public Information Center (PIC Tokyo). The exhibition will run through February 13. World Bank PIC is open 10am-6pm, closed Saturday, Sunday and national holidays.
Health Sector Strategy and Collaboration with Japan[]
February 3, 2009, Tokyo - The World Bank organized a public seminar entitled "World Bank's Sector Strategy for Health, Nutrition and Population Results and Collaboration with Japan" today, whose main speakers were Mr. Julian Schweitzer, Director for Health, Nutrition and Population and Mr. Armin Fidler, Lead Advisor for Strategy and Policy. Prof. Keizo Takemi of Harvard University and the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) introduced the main points of the recommendations proposed by the "Takemi Group" for G8 follow-up actions to strengthen global health.

January 16, 2009, Tokyo - The Ministerial Conference on Global Environment and Energy in Transport ended a two-day program today in Tokyo, adopting a Ministerial Declaration calling for further international actions and collaboration. Japanese Prime Minister Mr. Taro Aso opened the conference, and it was chaired by Transport Minister Mr. Kazuyoshi Kaneko. Mr. Jamal Saghir, World Bank Director for Energy, Transport and Water, gave the keynote speech during the first session on January 15.

January 8, 2009, Tokyo - Representatives of 12 Japanese local commercial banks in Kyushu visited the World Bank Tokyo Office today. World Bank Special Representative for Japan Mr. Kazushige Taniguchi, the Treasury Department's Japan Representative Mr. Yoshiyuki Arima, and IFC Deputy Representative Mr. Koichi Hiramoto gave presentations as an introduction to World Bank Group activities, and lending and borrowing programs.
January 6, 2009, Tokyo - A special exhibit of the "Orphan Meets Artist/Artist Meets Orphan (OMA)" project started today at the World Bank Public Information Center (PIC Tokyo), an initiative in which comtemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima will organize an art workshop together with orphans who have lost their parents to AIDS in Uganda later this month. OMA is a unique project connecting Japanese artists and these orphans in Africa via videoconference, sponsored by World Bank Tokyo Development Learning Center.
